Consistency is key

I often see that some of my clients can transition to a change in diet, sleep, movement etc, or take their herbs and supplements – and do so consistently and gracefully. They make it easy.

Others really struggle – can’t make the changes at all, they can’t do so consistently. Often, these people struggle with the motivation, the planning, the decision making.

I also started to see in myself how certain habits were easy and others felt like I was climbing Mount Everest. And how much easier certain behaviours got with time but still really hard to get back on the habit wagon when I fell off.

I refused to believe it was simply willpower, determination or drive. There appeared to a more fundamental level to it that I wanted to explore.

I started to research more about habits: biochemistry, the science. More importantly, the shortcuts, the hints, tips, and tricks. What I wanted to know was how can creating a new habit become easy, or at least easier.

As a result, I chose to do some extra training (as I do) to supplement my reading (James Clear Atomic Habits is a must-read) and research.

As a result, I recently became a Certified Consistency Coach™. The training was focused on the neuroplasticity around habits - rewiring your brain to make habits easier. Equally, understanding what and how certain actions and behaviours will make change harder. Your brain will fight you – which is something I have experienced so I was relieved to understand this better.

Consistent action creates consistent results

Some fundamentals to making a new habit:

  • The brain is wired to avoid change – it prefers things to be safe, familiar, and known if not easy and pleasurable. Even if that means being unhealthy.

  • You need to create space to make changes. You have limited bandwidth, in your brain and in your day, to make changes.

  • You need to upgrade yourself, your mindset to be able to make a change

  • You can create a new habit but it takes consistent effort- practice and repetition

  • Creating a new habit can be hard, but we can make it easier when we start to work with the brain as opposed to against it.

These new skills and knowledge will become part of my consultations with new and existing clients so if you are interested to learn more, please get in touch!
