I’ll start on Monday (and Other Lies We Tell Ourselves)

“I’ll start Monday.”
“After the holidays.”
“When work settles down.”

Sound familiar?
We’ve all said it — and genuinely meant it. But somehow, that perfect time never actually arrives.

I used to tell myself the same stories. Usually while promising I’d have more energy next week, or that once life slowed down I’d finally reset my habits. The truth? Life rarely slows down. And waiting didn’t protect me — it just postponed the relief I was craving, the health I deserved.

Why We Wait

There’s are many reasons we cling to the idea of “starting later.”

  • Fear of failure: It feels safer to wait than to start and not succeed.

  • Perfectionism: We tell ourselves we need the ideal conditions — no stress, no travel, perfect meal prep.

  • Overwhelm: Starting feels like adding another job to an already full list.

  • All-or-nothing thinking: If it can’t be 100%, it’s not worth doing at all.

But those thoughts quietly keep us stuck. The days and weeks pass, and nothing really changes — except our frustration.

What Actually Works

Instead of chasing the perfect moment, try this gentler, more grounded approach:

  1. Start small, but start.
Choose one habit that feels doable this week — add protein to breakfast, eat every 4–5 hours, or go for a 10-minute walk. Small, consistent actions shift biology faster than you think.

  2. Focus on rhythm, not perfection.
Your body responds to repetition, not rare hero efforts. Aim for “mostly” consistent, not flawless.

  3. Expect imperfection.
Life won’t pause. There will be birthdays, stress, travel and fatigue. Learning to adjust and reset— not abandon — your plan is what builds resilience.

  4. Anchor to meaning, not motivation.
Motivation fades. Instead, connect each change to why it matters:
“I eat better because I think clearer.”
“I rest because I show up better for my family.”

  5. Get support — you don’t have to do it alone.
Accountability and guidance make the difference between trying again and truly resetting. Support gives structure, perspective and reassurance when the old stories get loud, when old habits surface, when boredom kicks in.
