Holiday Balance

The holiday season is fast approaching, which means family, food, laughter and joy.

It is also the end of the year and the time to slow down and reflect. Some people may start to realise how tired, run-down or even burnt out they are after yet another busy year. A clear sign that it is time to relax and nurture your body and mind.

Finding balance this time of year is important. We need to enjoy the festivities of the season but equally take care of ourselves with rest and nourishment.

Here are some tips to support your body and mind during the holiday season to help achieve this much-needed balance.

  • Drink lots of filtered water and herbal teas to stay hydrated and support detoxification processes. This is especially important with the additional food and alcohol that is typical during the holidays.

  • Stick to your healthy sleep patterns for adequate rest and restoration. Maybe sneak in a nana nap or two.

  • Aim to have veggies, preferably a variety of colourful and non-starchy, at every meal, even when out.

  • Spend more time outside, moving your body if you can. This is especially important for office workers who spend their days in air-conditioned offices with no natural light.

  • Practice gratitude – every night before you got to bed, think or write down three things you are grateful for in your life. The more specific the better. This simple activity down-regulates the stress response allowing for better sleep.

These may seem quite basic for some of you, which is great. However, when we get busy, tired or simply change our routine, the basics can be the first to go. At this busy time of year, it is important to achieve a balance amongst the fun, food and friends and family, by honouring yourself with these health foundations.
